1446 Sillanpää, provisional designation 1938 BA, is a stony asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, about 8 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory on 26 January 1938.[9]
The asteroid is a member of the Flora family, a large group of S-type asteroids dwelling in the inner main-belt. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.0–2.5 AU once every 3 years 4 months (1,229 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.10 and is tilted by 5 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. It has a rotation period of 9.66 hours[lower-alpha 1][7][8] and an albedo of about 0.25, based on observations by the WISE and subsequent NEOWISE surveys.[4][5]
The minor planet was named after one of the most famous Finnish writers, Frans Eemil Sillanpää (1888–1964), first Finnish writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1939 (also see List of Laureates since 1901).[2]
