1 Clinton Street (previously known as 280 Cadman Plaza West) is a primarily residential building under development in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights. The building will replace a preexisting branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. It is being developed by Hudson Companies and designed by Marvel Architects.

History

The developer and architect of the building were chosen in September 2014.[1] Revised renderings of the structure were released in June 2015.[2]

Controversy

The sale of the lot owned by the library has been controversial, with worries that it will result in decreased space for the public facilities, despite the use of the building's first floor for a new library.[3][4][5] The sale has been presented as a means of helping the library system in Brooklyn meet its capital needs.[5]

Controversy has also occurred as the building's developers may have received preferential treatment due to their association with New York mayor Bill de Blasio[6] a claim the city denies.[7]

Usage

The building will be residential, with the exception of a small retail space and first floor library branch.[8] As part of the deal through which Hudson was given development rights, 114 of the building's apartments will be affordable.
