50 Years of Doctor Who: Preachrs Podcast Live is a series of Doctor Who themed stage shows directed, produced and written by Benjamin Maio Mackay. The shows were loosely based on the podcast Doctor Who: The Preachrs Podcast, which was Maio Mackay's long-running, popular podcast that celebrated Doctor Who.[1][2]

50 Years of Doctor Who: Preachrs Podcast Live!

The first show starred Benjamin Maio Mackay, Rob Lloyd (Comedian) and Nicholas Finch. The show looked at the incarnations of the Doctors and the best stories of all time. It featured a pre-recorded cameo from Nicholas Briggs. It was written, directed and produced by Benjamin Maio Mackay.[3]

It premiered in the 2013 Adelaide Fringe Festival and played in Sydney and Melbourne at various major Doctor Who conventions.[4]

50 Years of Doctor Who: Preachrs Podcast Live 1.5!

The second show starred Benjamin Maio Mackay and Eden Trebilco. The show looked briefly at the complete history of Doctor Who and was performed at the "Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary at The Gov" event. It featured a pre-recorded cameo from Nicholas Briggs. It was written, directed and produced by Benjamin Maio Mackay.[5][6][7][8]

50 Years of Doctor Who: Preachrs Podcast Live 2!

The third show starred Benjamin Maio Mackay and Rob Lloyd (Comedian). It had a rough, comedic story where the Doctor’s biggest fans, Benjamin Maio Mackay & Rob Lloyd, were kidnapped by Daleks and ordered to explain who the Doctor is, who the Doctor’s travelled with and his greatest enemies. It also featured quizzes, audience interaction and pre-recorded special guest appearances from stars of the show. It featured pre-recorded cameos from Nicholas Briggs, Richard Franklin, Terry Molloy, Simon Fisher-Becker and Peter Davison. All the cameo actors reprised their roles from the original TV show. It was written, directed and produced by Benjamin Maio Mackay.[9]

The production played the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2014 and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2014. It had sell-out seasons in both cities.[10][11][12][13]

50 Years of Doctor Who: Preachrs Podcast Live @ Comic Con!

The final show was a clip show based directly on the Preachrs Podcast. It was written, directed, produced and performed by Benjamin Maio Mackay. It was performed at the 2014 Oz Comic Con event in Adelaide. The show was well-received and some never before heard podcast footage was incorporated.[14]

Critical reaction

The critical reception of all 4 shows was exceptional, with all Adelaide Fringe seasons being highly acclaimed by many reviewers. The 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival season was one of the most praised shows by the Herald Sun.[15]

"it is constantly engrossing, even for a reviewer who has very little knowledge of the show." - 4.5 Stars, The Herald Sun (2014) [16]

"I came into this show not knowing what to expect, but it turned out to be awesome. This show is the perfect avenue to geek out through, whilst still enjoying some quick-witted comedy at the same time. The only downside was Lloyd’s anti-Tennant stance but hey, we all have our flaws." - The AU Review (2013) [17]

"This is no dry lecture, but it does cover all of the Doctors, including those in films and tele-movies, and how the actors have played them, as well as identifying significant points in the history of the series. The interaction between the three presenters, hilariously throwing in many an ad lib within the scripted presentation, led to further chit chat with a few members of the audience. There were a couple of chances for audience members to come forward and add to the discussion, as well as light hearted quizzes, conducted with more than a little assistance to ensure that the contestant won a bag of, what else, jelly babies." - Broadway World (2013) [18]

"A great way to continue celebrating a show adored by so many." - The AU Review (2014) [19]
