A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan, Former State Minister for Education, 2001-2006

A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan (born 26 March) is a Bangladeshi politician and currently a PhD candidate under Centre for Human Development and Applied Social Sciences (CERDAS) at the International Islamic University of Malaysia. His approved title of PhD thesis, Human Capital Development (HCD) in Bangladesh: A Case of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).[1]

Family background

He was born in the city of Comilla on the first day of the year 1957. His father late Mr. Obaidul Haque was a government officer and his mother Mahmuda Haque is a celestial housewife. He is third among his 6 brothers and 4 sisters. His wife Nazmun Nahar Baby graduated from the zoology department of Dhaka University and is currently the vice-president of the central committee of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Mohila Dal and their only lovely daughter Tanjeeda Nahar Haque is studying law in John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York.

Education

Since childhood, he was brilliant, intelligent and devoted to sports. He completed ‘secondary’ from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Government Boys' High School and ‘higher secondary’ from Government Intermediate Technical College (at present Government Science College). After graduation from the department of chemistry, University of Dhaka, he moved to the United States of America for higher education in 1982. He achieved an MBA degree from the New York Institute of Technology. At the same time, he served as ‘adjunct lecturer’ in Brooklyn College and Borough of Manhattan Community College and worked as ‘chemist’ in Super Farm Pharmaceutical Industry. After graduation, he served as vice-president of Cloverdale Inc., New York until 1996.

Involvement in student politics

He has an illustrious life as athlete and leadership in national politics. He once represented in the Bangladesh national volleyball team. He represented in the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall Student Union as sport secretary from 1978 to 1979 and as twice elected vice-president (VP) for 1979-1980 and 1980-1981 sessions from Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal (JCD). He became the youngest member of the twenty-one-members-led central convening committee of JCD formed by President Ziaur Rahman. Later on he became the treasurer of the JCD central committee formed immediately after the assassination of Shaheed Zia on 30 May 1981.

Organizing BNP in USA

He was the founder convener of BNP-USA chapter and secretary of US-BNP until 1996. In the meantime, he was chosen as the International Affairs Secretary by Desh Netri Begum Khaleda Zia in 1993.[2]

Member of Parliament and State Minister for Education (2001-2006)

He became a parliament member for the first time in the 7th national parliament election held in 1996 from the constituency 260, Chadpur-1, Kachua. In the election of 8th national parliament held in 2001, he defeated the heavyweight Awami league candidate former minister Dr. Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir with a huge margin. Honorable Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia appointed Mr. Milan as the state minister for education.[3] As a minister, he sets up an example of remarkable success in the education sector includes eradicating copying in the public exam, teacher’s recruitment policy. Furthermore, as the designated minister for Nilphamari and Chadpur districts, he initiated many reform activities for the people’s welfare. Especially after being responsible for Chadpur, he started a movement called Jatka Nidhon Protirodh Andolon (Stop Killing Small Hilsa Fish) in his own initiative. Recently he has disclosed many memorable stories of his passes life and his memory of 5 years while he was State Minister of Bangladesh Government from 2001 to 2006 with eurobdnewsonline.[4]

Honorary doctorate He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from British European University, London & the UK Commission for Consistent Learning for his outstanding contributions to the education sector of Bangladesh.
