Aaron S. Williams

Aaron S. Williams is a former Director of the Peace Corps.

In July 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Williams, a career international development specialist, to serve as the new director. The nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 7, 2009.[1] At the time, Williams was serving as vice president for international development at RTI International, a nonprofit. A former senior official with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Williams volunteered in the Dominican Republic in 1967–70. He also coordinated Peace Corps minority recruitment in Chicago in 1970–71.[2] On August 25, 2009 Mr. Williams was sworn in as the eighteenth Director of the Peace Corps. Williams is the fourth director in the Peace Corps’ history to have served as a Peace Corps Volunteer.[1]

Williams announced August 21, 2012 that he is leaving his post after three years citing personal and family considerations in his letter of resignation to President Barack Obama.[3]

Personal life

Williams is fluent in Spanish. He is a graduate of Chicago State University, and has an MBA from the University of Wisconsin. Williams met his wife, Rosa, during his service as a Volunteer in the Dominican Republic, and they have two sons.[1]
