Acta Crystallographica
Acta Crystallographica is a family of scientific journals, with peer-reviewed articles about crystallography, published by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). The journal was established in 1948 as a single journal called Acta Crystallographica (ISSN 0365-110X)[1] In 1967 the journal was separated into Section A and Section B, with Section C being added in 1983 and Section D being added in 1993.[2] Section E was added in 2001[3] and Section F in 2005.[4] The IUCr moved to online-only publication for all its journals from 2014.[5] Acta Crystallographica has been noted for the high quality of the papers that it produces,[6] as well as the large impact that its papers have had on the field of crystallography.[7]

Acta Crystallographica Section A: Foundations and Advances publishes articles reporting advances in the theory and practice of all areas of crystallography in the broadest sense. As well as traditional crystallography, this includes nanocrystals, metacrystals, amorphous materials, quasicrystals, synchrotron and XFEL studies, coherent scattering, diffraction imaging, time-resolved studies and the structure of strain and defects in materials.[8] The journal is abstracted and/or indexed in a variety of scholarly bibliographic databases, including: Biological Abstracts, Current Chemical Reactions Database, Chemistry Citation Index, Chemical Abstracts, INSPEC, ISI Chemistry Reaction Center, Medline, Science Citation Index, and Scopus. After Acta Crystallographica was split into sections in 1967, section A was named Acta Crystallographica. Section A: Crystal Physics, Diffraction, Theoretical and General Crystallography, published in Denmark (ISSN 0567-7394). However, the journal's name and ISSN changed again in 1982 to its current state.[9] In 2000 Acta Crystallographica Section A began to provide electronic article submission and subscription access online[10]

Acta Crystallographica Section B: Structural Science, Crystal Engineering and Materials publishes scientific articles related to the structural science of compounds and materials in the widest sense. Knowledge of the arrangements of atoms, including their temporal variations and dependencies on temperature and pressure, is often the key to understanding physical and chemical phenomena and is crucial for the design of new materials and supramolecular devices. Acta Crystallographica B is the forum for the publication of such contributions. Scientific developments based on experimental studies as well as those based on theoretical approaches, including crystal-structure prediction, structure-property relations and the use of databases of crystal structures, are published.[11]

Acta Crystallographica Section C: Structural Chemistry publishes exciting science with structural content, in particular, important results relating to the chemical sciences. Section C is the journal of choice for the rapid publication of articles that highlight interesting research facilitated by the determination, calculation or analysis of structures of any type, other than macromolecular structures. Articles that emphasize the science and the outcomes that were enabled by the study are particularly welcomed. Authors are encouraged to include mainstream science in their papers, thereby producing manuscripts that are substantial scientific well-rounded contributions that appeal to a broad community of readers and increase the profile of the authors.[12]

Acta Crystallographica Section D: Biological Crystallography covers "any aspect of structural biology, with a particular emphasis on the structures of biological macromolecules and the methods used to determine them".[13]

Acta Crystallographica Section E: Structure Reports Online is an open-access journal intended to be "a simple and easily accessible publication mechanism for the growing number of inorganic, metal-organic and organic crystal structure determinations".[14] Following the inclusion of Section C in the Crystallography Journals Online website, Section E was launched in 2001 as "the natural choice when single structures are to be reported, usually with less detailed discussion of the results (a Comment section is encouraged but not required) than would be appropriate for Section C".[3] Starting 2012, Acta Crystallogr. E is no longer included in the Scientific Citation Index.

Acta Crystallographica Section F: Structural Biology and Crystallization Communications is an electronic-only journal intended to be "a home for short communications on the crystallization and structure of biological macromolecules".[15] The journal proved quickly popular, and in its first year "12 issues were published and included over 300 articles and 1100 pages".[4]

The 11 September 1974 issue of the ISI's Current Contents carried an article on Acta Crystallographica by Eugene Garfield in his series of Journal Citation Studies. He wrote "Acta Crystallographica can justifiably take pride in its impact on science. The 45 [Acta] papers listed here stand high in a list of 6000 papers in science cited 100 times or more in 1961-1972". These 45 papers ranged over scattering factors, phase relations, statistics (including accuracy), thermal motion, extinction and some crystal structures.
