Adewale Tinubu (born June 26, 1967) is a Nigerian lawyer, Business magnate and the Chief Executive Officer of Oando, a Pan- African multinational energy corporation. Headquartered in Lagos State, Nigeria.[1][2]

Early life

He was born on June 26, 1967 at Eti Osa local government area of Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria.[3] He had his primary education in Lagos state and later obtained the West Africa School Certificate in 1983 from Federal Government College, Odogbolu before he proceeded to the University of Liverpool where he received a bachelor's degree in law in 1988 and later obtained a master's degree in law from London School of Economics in 1989, the same year he returned to Nigeria to train at the Nigerian Law School and received his call to the bar in 1990.[4][5]

Career

He began his career with his family law firm, K. O. Tinubu and Co, where he specialized in corporate and petroleum law.[6] In 1994, he co-founded Ocean and Oil Limited, an oil company located in Nigeria. On December 2001, they made a purchase of Italian Agip Petrol’s 60 percent stake in Agip Nigeria Plc, for $74 million, a purchase that was objected by shareholders.[7][8] Adewale and his team later branded the Oando, plc having been the largest shareholder at Gaslink, an industrial gas supply company.[9] His significant contribution made Oando the first African company to be enlisted on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of more than three billion South African rand.[10] Forbes Africa magazine described him as "the Nigerian Oil Baron Buying up America".[11]

Awards and nominations

He had received several awards and nominations.[12] Forbes magazine also named him “The King of African Oil” and ASKMEN magazine named him as one of the Top Ten CEOs in the world.[13] On January 2007, he was named a Young global leader by the World Economic Forum.[14] [15] In 2011, he bagged the award of the “African Business Leader of the Year”, awarded by Africa Investor.[16][17] In 2014, he bagged the award of the LEADERSHIP Business Person of the Year 2014, along with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who bagged the award of the Leadership Person of the Year 2014.[18]

Personal life

He is the nephew of chief Bola Tinubu, a renowned Nigerian politician, former governor of Lagos State and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress.[19]
