In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the afanc (/ˈeɪfæŋk/ AY-fanc)[1] is a type of carnivorous sea creature.
Publication history
The afanc first appeared in the original first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[2]
The afanc (gawwar samakat) appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the Al-Qadim setting in the City of Delights boxed set (1993). The afanc and the young afanc appeared in Monstrous Compendium Annual Volume One (1994).[3]
Description
An afanc is a great amphibious fish with a whale-like body and a head like a fish. An afanc is able to swim rapidly around its prey in closing circles to cause a whirlpool, sinking ships and drowning air-breathing creatures.
Other publishers
The afanc appeared in Tome of Horrors 3 in 2005, by Necromancer Games.[4] The entry was updated for the Pathfinder game rules and appeared in The Tome of Horrors Complete in 2011, by Frog God Games.[5]
