Alexandra Reid (Hangul: 알렉스; born March 5, 1993), professionally known as Alex Reid or by the mononym Alex, is an American singer-songwriter, composer, rapper and model. She is the leader of the South Korean girl group Rania.

Early life

Alexandra Reid was born on March 5, 1993 [1] in Lawrence, Kansas, the county seat of Douglas County, to a Caucasian father and an African-American mother. She attended Plano Senior High School during her teenage years.

Career

2004–14: Early work

Reid competed on the third season of the American reality television children's program Endurance. She was paired with Bjorn Leum on the third episode, "Pick Your Partner", and formed the third pair of the "Green Team" together. However, despite proving to be one of the strongest teams to compete in the season, the pair was eliminated on the sixth episode, "Squaring Off", following their defeat following two rounds of the "Fire-Water-Wood" challenge against the "Yellow Team" pair. Reid subsequently signed a recording contract with Def Jam Recordings following her elimination from the reality television program;[2][3] her debut single, "Body To Body", was released on November 7, 2011.[4] The single was produced by the American record producers DJ Montray and Dru Castro and was written by Reid herself.[4] She premiered a behind-the-scenes video of the recording session for the single on her official YouTube Channel on February 12, 2012.[5]

She released the first single, "Soldier", which featured the American rapper Timothy DeLaGhetto, from her debut extended play Letters To My Ex on August 3, 2012.[6] The single was produced by the South African-born American record producer J.R. Rotem and was co-written by Reid and DeLaGhetto themselves.[6] She released the second single, "My Ex", from the debut extended play on August 10, 2012, a week following the release of "Soldier".[7] The single was produced by the American producer Da Beatfreakz,[7] with the cover art of the single being shot by the American independent singer-songwriter Auburn.[7] Letter To My Ex was released on August 31, 2012 and received positive reviews from several forums.[8][9] However, the extended play failed to chart and was a commercial failure.

In 2014, Reid released two singles, "Want Me Some U" and "Good Girl", on her official SoundCloud profile.[10][11]

"My role is to bring my unique flavor to everything we do. I am rapping, singing, and composing music for the group. I plan to incorporate Korean into my verses as it comes naturally. I will not force it or insert it for the sake of marketing or gaining fans. When it’s simply right for the rhyme and sounds fly: that’s when I will incorporate it." – Reid[3]

DR Music announced that she would become a member of their South Korean girl group RaNiA on November 4, 2015.[12] The announcement divided the K-pop community and resulted in a heated debate between "hardcore and casual fans of K-pop and Hip-Hop, points of contention between cultural appropriation, creative licenses, and proper representation."[3] Reid then faced numerous visa issues, with her only verses featured in the title track, "Demonstrate", of the girl group's third extended play of the same name and was not included in the choreography.[13] A modified version of the music video for the title track premiered on November 11, 2015 and featured both her scenes and verse in "Demonstrate".[14]

DR Music announced that Reid, alongside Kim Hye-mi, would be a member of Rania's first upcoming sub-unit and was expected to debut sometime within June 2016.[15] However, the sub-unit was most likely scrapped as the plans failed to come through. In the same announcement, the record label also announced that the girl group would release an extended play sometime within August 2016.[15] The release date of the upcoming extended play was pushed following the departure of the three remaining original members of Rania, Di, T-ae and Xia, whom were later replaced by three new members named Jian, Jieun and Crystal.[16][17] On August 15, 2016, Reid revealed that she became Rania's new leader on her official Twitter profile.[18]
