Alpha Pi Phi (ΑΠΦ) is an international sorority for women founded on February 26, 2009 at Carleton University.[1] The organization currently has 9 chapters at universities in the United States and Canada.

History

Alpha Pi Phi was founded in 2009 by Heather McBride, Lesley Walker, Laura Kell, Lauren Crosby, Paz Arias, and Jessica Doyle, six women in their second year of studies at Carleton University; their purpose was to create a new women's organization on campus. After much thought and deliberation, the founding mothers came to the conclusion that there was a need for a new society on campus where young women could unite with one another and be bound together by shared qualities, virtues, and friendship. After beginning to meet weekly and establishing a sisterhood, Alpha Pi Phi was born.[2]

Symbols

Alpha Pi Phi's colors are royal purple and black. The official symbol is the black swan, while the official flower is the calla lily. The official jewels are amethyst and pearl.[3]

Pillars

Alpha Pi Phi has four pillars; sisterhood, philanthropy, academics, and leadership.[5]

Sisterhood

Alpha Pi Phi describes the sisterhood among members as "...an incredible support system and the bond between sisters is irreplaceable." Alpha Pi Phi promotes loyalty and love among sisters and encourages everlasting friendships that will continue to flourish.[6]

Philanthropy

Alpha Pi Phi is dedicated to giving back to the community and making a difference in the lives of others. This is done through donating and dedicating time to various charities throughout the year, including their official philanthropy, the Alzheimer Society of Canada. By holding fundraising events such as bake sales, Alpha Pi Phi is able to donate thousands of dollars each semester to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada. Each year, every chapter of Alpha Pi Phi participates in their local Walk for Alzheimer's event; the purpose of the event is to bring awareness and funding to Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.[7]

Academics

Within Alpha Pi Phi, a strong emphasis is placed on academic excellence. Many sisters part of the Dean's List each semester and continue to maintain a high academic standing and achieve their academic goals. In addition, many sisters participate in academic exchanges with other countries, co-op terms, and continue their learning through pursuing graduate degrees. Younger sisters have the opportunity to learn from older sisters in their major as well as sharing textbooks and aiding in exam preparation. Each spring, every chapter holds a "Senior Sendoff" to honor graduating seniors.[8]

Leadership

Many sisters of Alpha Pi Phi are involved in addition extra-curricular activities on campus and in the community, including being involved with faculty student associations and taking on leadership roles in organizing campus activities. Alpha Pi Phi states that "Being involved in other student groups outside of Alpha Pi Phi is very important to the sisters as it allows them to build experience, network with new people, and make their undergraduate student experience that much more memorable by leaving their make on the school."[9]

In addition to being involved in extra-curricular activities, there are many opportunities within the organization to be in a position of leadership. There are seven members who make up the executive board, their positions are:

As well as being involved as a member of the executive board, there are a multitude of chair positions within the organization.

International Council of Alpha Pi Phi Sorority (ICAPP)

Alpha Pi Phi's International Council is the governing body over all chapters and colonies of Alpha Pi Phi. They are in charge of ensuring sorority standards are upheld as well as planning the annual Alpha Pi Phi conference where sisters from all chapters are encouraged to attend to discuss ideas to improve the organization.[10]
