Major General Amal Karunasekara RSP, VSV, USP, ndu, psc, MSc is a Sri Lankan Major General. He took over duties as the Security Force Commander Kilinochchi and was the former Military Secretary Sri Lanka Army, Director Military Intelligence etc. He is also the Colonel of the Regiment Sri Lanka Light Infantry up to date.[1][2][3]

Early life & education

Amal is a product of Nalanda College Colombo. While at Nalanda, he was a Senior Cadet at the Cadet platoon and played hockey. Amal was also a National Hockey player. Amal holds a MSc from University of Madras India in Defence and Strategic Studies, a MSc from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University in Defence Management. He is married to Dananjanie and blessed with one daughter.

Military career

Amal joined Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in the year 1981, and after the completion of his initial Officer Cadet training in the prestigious Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyathalawa, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army in 1984.

Major General KADA Karunasekara RSP USP psc, who is popularly known as "Amal Karunasekara" is the 15th Colonel of the Regiment in the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment. To his credit, he has also been the Colonel of the Regiment previously from 20 May 2007 to 16 July 2009.

Amal had held key appointments such as Master General of Ordnance Branch, Director Military Intelligence, Director Infantry in the Sri Lanka Army etc. He had also commanded an infantry Battalion and an infantry Brigade in number of military operations conducted against LTTE terrorists and been the Commander of 53 Division (Sri Lanka) of Sri Lanka Army.

He is a Double Staff Qualified Military Officer at Defence Services Command and Staff College Sri Lanka and Defence Services Staff College India. Being a professional military officer with an excellent record of conduct and an outstanding carrier record spanning of more than 33 years as of today, Major General Amal Karunasekara also has followed numerous overseas courses on various military fields of studies in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, United States of America and United Kingdom.

He was also an Officer instructor at the Sri Lanka Military Academy and also Directing Staff at the prestigious Defence Command and Staff College (DCSC). He has the honour of being the Commander of first-ever Sri Lankan contingent of troops for the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations that was sent to Haiti in 2004. Amal is also the Chairman of Army Athletic Association.[4]

Major General K A D A Karunasekara RSP VSV USP ndu psc assumed duties as the new Commander of SFHQ – KILINOCHCHI after a brief religious ceremony of all denominations on 18 October 2015, which is his current position.
