Amenra is a Belgian post-metal band from Kortrijk, formed in 1999. They are known for a brooding sound and intense live performances.

History

Amenra was formed in 1999 in the West Flanders city of Kortrijk. The band was founded by vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout and lead guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove. The two had been in the hardcore punk band Spineless and wanted to create music with more "heart and soul".[1][2]

The group began releasing their dark Mass albums in 2003 and have been experimenting with both sound and liveshows ever since. In 2013, the ensemble joined Neurot Records to release their fifth full-length album.[3][4] The label was founded by Neurosis; a band that has been influential in Amenra's style and career.[5][6]

Themes and artistry

Recurring themes in Amenra's music are the duality of birth and death, light and darkness and pain and sacrifice. The band uses psychological and religious motives. Though calling himself agnostic, Van Eeckhout acknowledges the presence of spirituality and religion in the band's work.[7] Amenra often collaborate with visual artists and choreographers, including Willy Vanderperre[8] and Berlinde De Bruyckere.[9]

Church of Ra

From the 2005 release of Mass III, Amenra founded a collective of like-minded artists called Church of Ra. These are often friends who share Amenra's DIY ethic and mindset.[10] Church of Ra collaborates with Amenra on art and performances. Some of the group's better known members are Oathbreaker and the Black Heart Rebellion, as well as side-projects of Amenra's band members.
