Amrita Puri (born 20 August 1983) is an Indian film actress who is known for her roles in the critical and commercially successful Bollywood films like Aisha (2010), Blood Money (2012) and Kai Po Che! (2013).
Career
After completing her post-graduation, Puri started her career through writing and doing theatre, with her first play being Quasar Thakore Padamsee's English play Retellings View From The Stage.[1] For a year she did copywriting for advertising agency Ogilvy along with freelancing for lifestyle magazine.[2] After getting her portfolio done by Dilip Bhatia, she started auditioning for movies and ad films. Soon she did her first ad for Kotex and later featured in ads and TV commercials for several brands, including People First, Garnier and L'Oreal.[1][3]
After auditioning for a few films, she finally landed with the role of Shefali Thakur in Aisha.[4] She gained critical and good commercial acclaim through the movie, which was dubbed as "India's first chick flick". It was loosely based on the Jane Austen novel Emma and its Hollywood adaptation Clueless. Her performance was described by leading critics as "heartwarming" (The Times of India), a "real surprise" (Press Trust of India) and "steals the film" (Rajeev Masand, CNN-IBN).[5][6][7]
Post Aisha, she went back to do few plays including the M.E.T.A award winning play by Akvarious Productions The Interview (alongside Karan Pandit and Kashin Shetty), and Famous Last Words (alongside Sahil Jaffrey and Anish Trivedi).[8][9]
In 2012, she appeared in Blood Money as the female lead Aarzu. Upon release the film as well as her performance received mostly positive reviews from critics as well as good audience response. It was Above Average grosser thus making Puri's second critical and commercial success.
In 2013, she appeared in Kai Po Che! as female lead Vidhya Bhatt. Her character was Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput)'s sister and Rajkummar Rao's love-interest and then wife.The film was based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life. The film was shot mostly in Ahmedabad.During the film's post screening it was praised by several actors. In an Interview stated by Puri about the film with The Times of India,"I loved all the attention that I got from the 3 male leads because there was no other girl on the sets most of the time."
Upon release the film as well as her performance received mostly positive reviews from critics as well as good audience response.CNN-IBN described her as "nice" while The Times of India described "The Romantic Garba Scene of Yadav-Puri is one of the excellent scenes". The film like her other films was declared above average grosser and thus making Puri's third critical and commercial success.
She is currently playing the role of 'Harleen' in Star Plus's new show directed by Nikhil Advani P.O.W.- Bandi Yuddh Ke
Personal life
She is the daughter of Aditya Puri, CEO and MD of HDFC Bank.[10] She resides in Mumbai, India
