Amy DuBois Barnett
Amy DuBois Barnett was born in New York City, NY in 1974. She has recently stepped down from the being the editor in chief of Ebony magazine. Prior to her editorship at Ebony magazine, Amy held various positions that showcased her exceptional abilities in the field of journalism. Her first time working for a magazine was while she was pursuing her MFA in creative writing at Columbia University. Amy wrote for the Fashion’s Almanac where she wrote about her interest in fashion. The Fashion’s Almanac analyzes and critiques the lasts fashion trends of the season. It publishes articles about the most popular look of the season. She was originally interested in going into the fashion industry. Writing for the Fashion’s Almanac is where she discovered her talents in journalism. After earning her M.F.A Barnett went on to be the Deputy Editor of Harper’s Bazaar, the Editor in chief of Honey magazine, the Managing editor of Teen People and then worked with Essence magazine before joining the editing team at Ebony.[1][2]
While at Ebony, Barnett was accredited for being the first person to redesign the magazine from top to bottom in their 66 year history. Not only did she redesign the magazine but she also grew Ebony’s base by 11 percent in 2011, and introduce new franchises such as the “Black Wealth”, the Ebony Beauty Awards and “50 Finest”. For her outstanding work at Ebony as well as her other editing positions, Barnett received eight Salute to Excellence Awards in 2012 as well as the Media Executive of the Year in 2012 by Target Market News.
In mid summer of 2014, Barnett announced that she was leaving her position in Ebony become the Executive Editor at ESPN. In this position she manages a website dedicated towards the African American community. Barnett manages the content dealing with sports and culture that are published on the website. The people currently working with her appreciates her talent and feels she has great potential as the editor of Jason Whitlock’s website.[3]
