Apatelodidae, the American silkworm moths, is a family of insects in the order Lepidoptera. They belong to the hawkmoth, silkworm and relatives superfamily Bombycoidea.[1]
Distribution
Species are exclusively found in the New World, with the highest diversity in the Neotropical ecozone.
Diversity
The family consists of about 10 genera and about 150 species.
Taxonomy
There are two to three subfamilies, depending on the position of the Phiditiinae, which is either included in the Apatelodidae or treated as a separate family. Some researchers still consider the family part of Bombycidae, where it was traditionally included.
