Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela

Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela is a South African brewmaster. Nxusani-Mawela is the first person from South Africa to earn a National Diploma in clear fermented beverages.[1] She is also the first black woman in South Africa to found a microbrewery.[2] Her company, Brewster's Craft, introduces students to the science of beer making and she has also helped organize International Women's Collaboration Brew Day (IWCBD) events in South Africa.[3]

Biography

Nxusani-Mawela first experienced brewing at various family events where traditional beer, known as umqombothi, is often drunk.[2] She grew up in Butterworth[4] in the Eastern Cape and later went to the University of Pretoria where she earned a Bachelor's degree in microbiology.[2] Nxusani-Mawela then did a brewing internship at South African Breweries (SAB) for 18 months.[3] Later, she earned a diploma from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling[2] and then was certified as a trainer for the Institute, becoming the first black African to be accredited. She also earned a certification to judge beer from the South African Beer Judging Certification Program.[3]

In 2013, she partnered with Hoggshead in order to start her own craft brewery, Brewhogs.[2]
