Arin Paul (born 20 April 1980) is a film director and writer. He has made documentaries and short films but he came to limelight after directing the commercial film 10:10.
Early life
Paul was born in Belur, West Bengal and completed his schooling from St. Edmund's School, Shillong, Andrew's High (H.S.) School, Kolkata and Scottish Church Collegiate School, Kolkata before studying accountancy at Syamaprasad College, Kolkata. He went on to complete his diploma in film-making at the Asian Academy of Film & Television in Noida.[1] After working in Noida and New Delhi, he shifted to Kolkata. His father was a professional photographer and his mother a housewife.
Career
After working as an assistant director in Noida and New Delhi, Paul started assisting in Kolkata. He also directed three documentaries for an NGO in Rajasthan. In 2003 he started assisting film director Anjan Dutt.[2] He was also associated with directors like Partha Sen, Anindita Sarbadhicari and Anindo Banerjee.[3] In 2008, after assisting for around five years,[4][5] Paul started working as a director. He made quite a few advertisements for Kolkata Traffic Police and was also associated as the Project Trainer of the Video Documentation Project, organised by United Nations Development Programme in association with the Bengal Network of People Living with HIV+ in 2008. As a result of the project, he was awarded the Youth Achiever of the Year award from Rotary Club, Kolkata. In the same year he shot his debut short film ...and there wasn't everafter..., which was screened at the Himachal Film Festival on 13 May 2011. He shot two more short films and directed his first full-length Bengali feature film Sabhdhan Pancha Aashche,[6] which remained unfinished. Around August 2008 he started shooting a second full-length Bengali feature film 10:10,[7] which was released on 28 November 2008. The film starred Soumitra Chatterjee, and Claudia Ciesla among others. The next year, he directed a television series named Coffee & More for Zee Bangla. The title music was composed by music director Neel Dutt and the title lyrics were written by Srijit Mukherji. He made the television series Aajke for Kolkata TV in 2010. During this time he made a documentary named Jyanto Durga (Durga Live) for ABP Group's online portal Anandautsab.com . In 2011, he shot a short film Just Like That and a documentary about the director Nripen Ganguly. On 3 April 2012, his second short film Terrorist was selected and screened at CINEMATHEQUE 2012.[8] As a tribute to Indian Cinema Paul made a short film named a short film on religion and released it online (on YouTube & vimeo) on 3 May 2013. It is also seen from the short film that Paul has formed his own production house named Arin Paul Productions.[9][10] Paul recently completed another short film named Et Tu Brute...?[11] Paul is presently working on a documentary on filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak.[12]
