Austria was present at the Eurovision Song Contest 1986, held in Bergen, Norway.
For 1986, the Austrian broadcaster, Österreichischer Rundfunk, selected their candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest internally. They chose Timna Brauer, daughter of well-known painter Arik Brauer, and one-half of the world music/jazz duo, Timna Brauer & Elias Meiri Ensemble, to represent Austria at Bergen. The song chosen to go with her was "Die Zeit ist einsam" (Time is lonely), composed by Peter Janda with lyrics by Peter Cornelius.
At the Contest in Bergen, Brauer was the sixteenth performer on stage, following Cyprus and preceding Sweden. At the end of judging that evening, the song received a total of 12 points, placing Austria 18th out of a field of 20 competing countries.
