Chronology
Predecessor BMW N62

The BMW N63 is a twin turbo DOHC V8 piston engine which replaced the (naturally aspirated) N62 and has been produced from 2008–present. It was launched in the 2008 BMW X6 xDrive50i,[1] and later the F01 BMW 750i.[2] The location of the intake and exhaust manifolds are reversed compared to a traditional V8. The BMW Motorsport division version of this engine, called S63, debuted in the X5M and X6M and later appeared in the M5 and M6. Alpina also uses a variant of this engine in its B5 Bi-Turbo, B6 Bi-Turbo and B7 Bi-Turbo.

Design

The exhaust manifolds and turbochargers are located between the banks of cylinders (i.e. on the "inside" of the V8) and the intake manifolds are located on the outside of the engine;[3] this is the opposite of the traditional manifold arrangement for a V8. This new design creates a more compact engine package and reduces the width of the assembled engine, also decreasing the distance from the exhaust manifolds to the turbochargers.[4] The engine uses air-to-water intercoolers, which are more efficient and provide a shorter air path than standard air-to-air intercoolers.[1]

Similar to the N54B30, the original N63B44 and S63 do not use the second generation Valvetronic technology found in other current engines. The principal advantage of Valvetronic is the reduction of intake vacuum, which is not an issue in the pressurized intake found in a turbo-charged engine. Valvetronic was added to updated variants of the engine for the 2012 BMW M5/M6 (S63TU) and then for the 2013 BMW 750i and 650i Gran Coupe.

In terms of performance, the N63 is a close match to the N73 V12 engine found in the previous-generation E65 760i/Li, so the V12 engine had to be redesigned with twin turbochargers for the F01 760i/Li in order to maintain its status as the flagship of the range.[5]

The S63 engine cover

The S63 is BMW's Motorsport division version of the N63, which debuted in the BMW X6 M. The S63 uses two twin-scroll turbochargers plus a pulse tuned, cross-engine exhaust manifold[3] to keep constant exhaust pulses flowing to the turbos at every 180 degree rotation.

S63B44T0

A technical update to the S63, known as the S63B44T0, debuted on the F10 M5 sedan. This version uses Valvetronic, a 10:1 compression ratio (compared with 9.3:1 for the non-TU version) and 1.5 bar of boost (compared with 1.3).[6] It is the first BMW M to use Valvetronic.

S63B44T2

The S63B44T2 debuted on the new generation 2015 X5 M and X6 M models.

Applications:

Alpina

Alpina uses a variant of the N63 engine that makes at least 25% more power than the base engine. Compared to the S63, Alpina's first and second variants makes lower horsepower but more torque.

For the 2013 model year, it received Valvetronic like all other N63 engines. Compared to BMW M's version of the 4.4L twin-turbo engine (such as found in the F10 BMW M5), Alpina's engine has 20 hp less but more maximum torque which is also available at a lower RPM.[7]

BMW N63 Customer Care Recall Package

On December 29, 2014, BMW released "SI B00 13 14",Recall affecting any vehicle that used the 4.4-liter V-8 (N63B44O0) within the 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X5, and X6 model lines manufactured between 2008 and 2012. Detailed instruction for the program were given in "SI B11 06 14". Dealership instructions include checking:

The sweeping program also extended to vehicles that had gone out of warranty, without concern for mileage on the vehicle. As of February 2015, both the US and Canada are implementing this campaign.

Additionally, the service interval would be shortened to nearly half, with a 12 month/10,000 mile (16,000 km) check-up instead of the long-life treatment the BMW had been maintaining up to that point, requiring a check every 2 years and 15,000 miles (25,000 km).

in June 2013, dealerships had received a service bulletin regards to the N63 powerplant, which amended the oil capacity requirements of the engine, adding a full (1) US quart to the capacity of the motor, citing "increased oil consumption" in the twin turbo V8.

Models affected by the recall included:

The dealership bulletin was accompanied by region sales rep meetings with branch/service managers, informing them of the forthcoming campaign, and issuing instructions to contact all owners serviced at their branches operating the N63 engine. The accompanying marketing campaign, which would be a major focus for 2015 of BMW world-wide, was intended to dampen the effect of such a wide spread recall on BMW's waning brand loyalty and customer service issues, the tactics of which could be seen in the extended efforts surrounding the recall.

BMW dealerships were instructed to offer extra incentives for owners affected by this campaign, offering trade-in cash bonuses for their N63 equipped vehicles with the purchase of a new BMW (details in a separate sales bulletin - "N63 Customer Loyalty Offer"). Sales teams were also provided with discretionary authorization to provide customers with a gift of $50 value, including anything from a gas card, gift bag containing BMW Lifestyle products, or vehicle detailing.
