Barkha Sharma is an Indian fashion designer. She curates the men’s line labeled “Barkha ‘n’ Sonzal” along with her sister.[1] In 2010, the duo styled santoor Maestros Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Rahul Sharma for the patriotic song Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.[2]

Barkha’s label is the first to design a sherwani made of string beans, purple cabbage and green peas for PETA India,[3]

In 2014, “Barkha ‘n’ Sonzal” were nominated for the first ever International Woolmark Prize in the menswear category to represent India.[4][5]

Barkha under the label “Rhydhun” designs handicrafts created from all over India and various parts of the world.[6][7][8]

Barkha was recently invited to perform for Prince William and Kate Middleton upon their visit to Delhi, at the Hyderabad House. She played the tanpura along with her husband, santoor Maestro Rahul Sharma.[9][10][11]

Career

Barkha launched her fashion brand in 2009, along with her sister, with a men’s collection called "Dance of the Warrior".[12]

The sister duo has also designed - The Yogi,[13] Rebel, Spirituale, Wah Taj Tea Ad, Tata Ad shot in Kashmir. She also designed the music album cover for Namaste India, an album by Rahul Sharma[14][15] along with the music video "Meeting by the Nile".[16][17][18][19][20]

Barkha has also lent her voice to Rahul Sharma's album "Spirituale," reciting Rumi's poems. She is featured with her husband in a Richard Clayderman music video from the album Confluence 2. She has also made a fashion film featuring Terrence Lewis which was selected to be shown as part of the Fashion Films Premiere at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2013.[21][22][23]

Personal life

Barkha is married to Santoor Exponent Rahul Sharma and they have a son named Abhinav Sharma born in June 2014.[24] Barkha Sharma is a B.Sc graduate from Purdue University, U.S.A and also completed a marketing program at The Wharton Business School. She is a dancer and a designer, and has also studied the various weaves of textiles, designing, as well as interior decoration. Barkha opted to learn dance from Kerala along with understanding and learning local crafts. She is also a classical dancer trained in the Mohiniattam dance form.[25] She has worked with various tribes of India, South Africa, parts of Europe, America, Egypt and Russia as well as learnt their local dances.[26]

Barkha has also worked across various NGO's, one of them being Aseema for which she designed jackets for the winners of the rickshaw challenge in 2009, the benefits of which were donated to charity.[27]
