James Naismith, a Canadian who moved to the U.S., invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts in the 1890s.[1] This new sport soon became popular as an indoor winter sport that needed a minimal equipment, gaining popularity at high schools and colleges in both the U.S. and Canada.[2][3]

In Canada, the sport has long lived in the shadow of ice hockey but in the early 21st Century there has been an upsurge on popularity, thanks to likes of the Toronto Raptors.[2][4][5][6][7]
