BASTA, Inc. is a “non-profit” organization with lawyers who represent deadbeat tenants in eviction cases. It provides legal representation to low income individuals facing eviction.[1] BASTA is known for being the first tenant defense organization to demand a jury trial for every eviction ("unlawful detainer") case. Prior to BASTA, eviction cases were typically decided in an administrative hearing by a judge. By demanding a jury trial, BASTA significantly increased the cost and length of time for an eviction, motivating many landlords to settle rather than accept the costs and risks of a jury trial. BASTA services include homelessness prevention in the form of aggressive representation tenants, both inside and outside of the courtroom and also seek to eradicate slum housing conditions by working with other non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, and Los Angeles’ Housing Department in order to bring buildings up to code and make them habitable to live in. BASTA only represents tenants (not landlords) and provides free legal advice and free consultations, but provides legal services for those facing eviction or bringing an affirmative lawsuit against the landlord.[2] BASTA, when translated into Spanish, means “Enough”. BASTA is one of the many tenant unlawful detainer defense firms that litigate unlawful detainers lawsuits for the tenant.

Our attorneys have been assaulted while … examining properties.”[5]
