The Bochumer Symphoniker is the classic orchestra of Bochum, Germany.
History
The Bochumer Symphoniker have been founded in 1918 as "Städtisches Orchester" (City Orchestra), at the same time as the theatre Schauspielhaus Bochum. Main focus was the support of the theatre. The first public concert was was given under the lead of the Music director Rudolf Schulz-Dornburg at the 20 May 1919.
With the Music director Klaus Nessträter it got attention in whole Germany. Between September 1944 and July 1945 the service was interrupted due to World War II.
The leader of the orchestra at the opening of the new building of the theatre in 1955 was guest conductor Paul Hindemith.
The grand opening of the Expo 58 in Brussels was lead by Franz-Paul Decker.
During the leadership of Yvon Baarspul (1964 till 1970) was the size of the orchestra extended by 17 people to 80 and renamed to it current name „Bochumer Symphoniker“.
Under Music director Othmar Mága (1971 bis 1982) the number of visitors had been increased to 54.000 visitor in 1978/79 the 75 concerts. In 1982 Gabriel Chmura was nominate to the position of Music director, followed by Eberhard Kloke in 1988. With Eberhard Kloke the orchestra was playing first time at the Jahrhunderthalle, a classical industrial production hall. This was in 1991. In the same year also the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra played first time in this venue.[1][2]
Since 1994 Steven Sloane is the Music director of the Bochumer Symphoniker. He won with the orchestra several awards..[3]
The orchestra conducts also a lot of international concerts like in Israel, USA in Los Angeles and in Chicago or in Estonia.
In 2006 the orchestra played a new version of the opera Die Soldaten from Bernd Alois Zimmermann at the Ruhrtriennale, which was also presented in 2008 in New York.
The orchestra mades also some Crossover music projects for example with Jethro-Tull-Frontmann Ian Anderson. The played also with famose german musician Herbert Grönemeyer at the sold out Ruhrstadion in front of 29,000 people.[4] In 2011 they played seven concerts together with Sting during his Symphonicities Tour.[5]
Concert halls
Till 2016 the main concert halls have been the Auditorium maximum of the Ruhr University Bochum and the Jahrhunderthalle. Since opening of the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr at the 27 Oktober 2016 it is their main venue.[6]
Recordings
For the britisch Label ASV the orchestra has recored the the complete works of the german romanticism Joseph Marx; the first CD Natur-Trilogie was awarded by the British Music Society as best CD of the Month, the second CD, the Orchesterlieder, was nominated of the Grammy.[7]
