The Burun languages are a branch of the Nilotic languages. They had historically been classified among the Luo languages. They are:
- North Burun (Maiak, Mughaja, Kurmuk)
- South Burun (Mabaan, Ulu, Jumjum)
They are a dialect chain, close enough for some mutual intelligibility between neighboring varieties.
Most classifications include the family within the Western Nilotic branch (eg. Starostin (2015),[2][3] Hammarström et al. (2016),[4] Bender (2000)). However Blench (2012) classifies the family as a primary branch of Nilotic.[5]
