Cambridge Tutors College (CTC London) is an Independent Sixth Form College situated in South Croydon, outer London. Founded in 1958 as a tutorial centre to help boys in preparation for their common entrance exam, it has expanded into a highly successful, academically focused, international sixth form college. Students come from over twenty countries including China, Malaysia, Viet Nam, Singapore, Myanmar, the Baltics, Balkans, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
CTC's academic programmes
CTC offers two year A-level courses, which start in September, including one with a more focused English language (EAL) element; a fast track, 18 month A-level courses, which starts in January.
The college also offers a one GCSE year course which starts in September and a one-year pre A level Foundation course which concentrates on the development of English language skills for non native speakers. In addition to GCSE and A-level courses, the colleges provides specialist English language support, which focuses on preparation for IELTS examination.
Results and awards
In 2015 56% of all A-levels taken were graded A or A*, 90% achieved an A*-C grade. 80% of students gained at least one A grade and 64% gained at least two A grades.
CTC students were awarded two CIFE (Council for Independent Education) Awards in 2015.[1]
In 2015, the CTC also received three Good Schools Guide awards for excellence in Mathematics.
Accreditation
CTC is a member of British Association of Independent Students with International Students (BAISIS),[2] Council for Independent Education(CIFE),[3] and the Independent Schools Council (ISC).[4] The Principal is also a member of the Independent Schools Association (ISA).[5]
Scholarships and Bursaries
Academic scholarships are awarded each year to exceptionally able students. Bursaries are allocated in cases of financial need. The Trustees of Cambridge Tutors College are committed to broadening access to CTC by offering to eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support with the payment of tuition fees. Such support is known as a Bursary and this may be awarded in the form of a reduction of up to 100% of tuition fees payable, depending on the financial, compassionate or other pertinent circumstances of applicants.
Scholarship and Bursary awards are normally awarded for the duration of a student’s course dependent on the student maintaining a high standard of attendance, behaviour and academic endeavour.
History
CTC was founded in 1958 by a graduate of Cambridge University Roger Osborne. The college’s original purpose was to provide tuition to children preparing for secondary school entrance examinations. The college was originally based in the Surrey village of Warlingham and moved to its present location in South Croydon in 1967.
In 1973 the college became a charitable trust, it is consequently registered with the Charity Commission.[6]
The trust has three main aims:
- To promote high academic standards.
- To foster international understanding, welcoming to people of all faiths, nationalities and backgrounds.
- To create an adult focused environment to prepare students for higher education
To date the college has had six Principals: Roger Osborne, David Wilson (now Senior Advisor for International Relations), David Lowe, Mario Di Clemente, Mark Eagers, and the present Principal Dr Chris Drew .
