The Canadian-Polish Congress (Polish: Kongres Polonii Kanadyjskiej pl:Kongres Polonii Kanadyjskiej, KPK), is a Canadian not-for-profit organization federally integrated on the 7th of February 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba which was previously known as the Federation of Polish Societies in Canada.[1] It was later on reconstituted on the 16 of March 1948 as the Canadian Polish Congress.[2] The change of the organization's name was during a General Meeting held in Toronto, capital of Ontario, during the 2nd to 4 September 1944.[3] Once called the Federation of Polish Societies in Canada, it is the first Polonian umbrella organization created by Polish-Canadians who immigrated to Canada to coordinate the cultural activities and to articulate the concerns of the Polish-Canadian community on public policy issues.[4] The Canadian Polish Congress also promotes the knowledge of and respect for the history of Poland along with its rich heritage, and the contribution of members from the Polish community to Canadian culture and various cultures around the world.[5]

Mission Statement

In its Mission Statement, the Canadian-Polish Congress provides leadership to its community through the coordination, support and unification of other Canadian-Polish organizations as it represents its interests before the people and Government of Canada through the usage of a powerful national voice and the promotion of Polish-Canadian rights to ensure equal participation in Canadian society.[6] On the official website, http://www.kpk.org/, majority of the information is published in two languages - the English and Polish language, with the exception of press releases and letters as they are only displayed in their original language.

Organizations

The Canadian Polish Congress aims to reflect the voices of over 800,000 Canadians of Polish ancestry.[7] Over 200 organizations belong to the Canadian Polish Congress including The Polish Institute of Arts & Science in Canada,[8] Polish Combatants' Association,[9] Polish National Union of Canada,[10] Polish Alliance of Canada,[11] Polish-Canadian Women's Federation,[12] the Polish Teacher's Association, Association of Polish Engineers in Canada,[13] Millennium Foundation, Polish Culture Society of Edmonton and the Scouting movement. The Canadian Polish Congress also supports the Council for the Support of Polish Studies at the University of Toronto to sustain studies of Polish Language and Polish Literature.[14] It is still a work in progress as the programs in the Polish Language and Literature are not fully funded. Nonetheless, money is continuing to be raised to allow students to pursue this Slavic language and History field. Many other organizations are smaller in size, but no less important to the community.
