The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) was established in 1976 and brings together thirty-one research libraries. Twenty-nine members are university libraries, plus Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI).[1]
Mission and objectives
The organization's mission is to "enhance the capacity of Canada’s research libraries to partner in research and higher education, seeking effective and sustainable scholarly communication and public policy encouraging of research and broad access to scholarly information."[2]
CARL established three priorities:
- Transforming scholarly communications
- Influencing public policy to foster an environment that favours research and innovation.
- Advancing the research library.[3]
