In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the carbuncle is a type of fictional monster.
Publication history
The carbuncle first appeared in White Dwarf #8 (August 1978). The carbuncle appeared in the original first edition Fiend Folio (1981).[1]
The carbuncle appeared in fourth edition in the humorous adventure "Fools Grove" on the Wizards of the Coast website.[2]
Description
A carbuncle is a small, armadillo-like creature with a large ruby stuck into its head. A carbuncle typically infiltrates a group of adventurers and spreads dissent through psychic powers.

The carbuncle appeared in the Tome of Horrors (2002) from Necromancer Games.[3]
The carbuncle appeared in Paizo Publishing's book Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary 3 (2011), on page 44.[4]
