Carpenters Workshop Gallery is a contemporary art and design gallery with branches in London, Paris and New York.[1] Carpenters Workshop Gallery represents upcoming and established designers such as Atelier Van Lieshout,[2] Random International,[3] Wendell Castle[4] and Rick Owens.[5]

History

Carpenters Workshop Gallery was founded in 2005 by two French entrepreneurs, Loïc Le Gaillard and Julien Lombrail.[6][7] The gallery has two spaces in London : Michael Road in Chelsea and Albemarle Street in Mayfair. In Paris, it has a gallery in Le Marais which opened in 2011[8] as well as a research and development center in the suburbs of the city. A fourth exhibition space opened in November 2015 at the heart of Fifth Avenue New York City.[9] "When we started out, less than a decade ago, there was little connection between art and design. Since then, things have changed so much. We are pleased to see that now there are designers who no longer do industrial design; they are creating a new kind of discipline that is closer to art", - says Julien Lombrail about the concept of the gallery.[10]

The gallery's first exhibition in 2006 showed paintings from Chinese artist Zhang Huan.[11]

In 2010 Sotheby's and Carpenters Workshop Gallery organised a design exhibition in the gardens of Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, England. Sculptures from designers Wendell Castle, Studio Job, Studio Makkink and Bey & Pablo Reinoso were shown for the duration of the summer.[12]

In 2012 Carpenters Workshop Gallery dedicated an exhibition to the British collective Random International, called "Before the Rain" in their Parisian space.[13][14] The exhibition was an introduction for a major art installation, « Rain Room », which was shown first at the Barbican in London and then at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.[15]

In 2013 Carpenters Workshop Gallery exhibited in its London gallery a selection of furniture created by Rick Owens. It was the first time that the designer's pieces of furniture were shown to the public in an exhibition.[16]

In 2014 at Biennale des Antiquaires Carpenters Workshop Gallery was the only contemporary design gallery to be given a space.[17] The same year Julien Lombrail and Loïc Le Gaillard were included in the Power 100 by Art+Auction Magazine.[18]

In 2015, Carpenters Workshop Gallery established a research and development space in Roissy, north of Paris. In this new center artists and designers are able to work directly with skilled artisans.[19]

Carpenters Workshop Gallery is present at around 14 international Art & Design fairs a year, such as PAD Paris. "Besides PAD Paris, Carpenters Workshop Gallery takes part in Design Miami/Basel, Design Miami, the Paris Biennale, and the Salon: Art and Design fair", - explains Aurélie Julien, associate gallery director, in an interview with Modern magazine.[20] In 2015 Carpenters Workshop Gallery showed the latest works of South African born artist Kendell Geers at Guild Design Fair.[21]
