Almaty Central Mosque (Kazakh: орталық мешіті Алматы) is one of the largest mosques in Almaty, and Kazakhstan as well, which is designed for 7000 visitors. Built on the site of the old mosque, which functioned from 1890 as well, but was caught on fire and burned in 1987. The foundation of the mosque was filed in 1993, but the construction was completed only in 1999. In 2000, a large dome was decorated by verses of Quran and calligraphy which was performed by Turkish art masters. A high-quality sound equipment was purchased and also installed. The repair was carried out throughout the first floor, which has a powerful air conditioning, office of the chief imam and accountant supplied with modern equipment, the chairs in the room to read the Quran have been replaced by made of precious wood.

On December 22, 2006, the National Bank of Kazakhstan officially added Central Mosque symbol to the 500 tenge which was a 925 silver edition of 4000 pieces. The purpose of featuring Central Mosque to a currency symbol was to promote the understanding of the whole culture of Kazakhstan, and to show that converting to a religion teaches peaceful spiritual and moral self-improvement of the individual.[1]
