Charmin Smith

Charmin Smith is the current Associate Head Coach[1] of the University of California, Berkeley women's basketball team where she has been since 2007. She is a native of St. Louis, Missouri (Ladue Horton Watkins High School, class of 1993). Smith played in American Basketball League or ABL and then the WNBA. Her brother Charles was her role model for basketball when she was growing up.

Playing career

After her years at Stanford, Smith played one year with the Portland Power in the ABL. She would be signed by the Minnesota Lynx for the 1999 WNBA season. In 2000 the Seattle Storm picked her up in the expansion draft, and she would play for the Storm for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. She would play one more season in the WNBA for the Phoenix Mercury in 2003.[2] Smith went overseas in 2003 to play for the Swedish team Solna Vikings before retiring from the sport as a player. During her off seasons with the WNBA Smith would work as a production assistant and editor with NBA entertainment, as well as with the Seattle Storm CR office.

College career

Smith played her collegiate basketball for the Stanford University basketball program from 1993−1997. Smith, a four-year letter winner at Stanford, graduated with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and also obtained a master's degree in the same subject from Stanford as well. Smith went to three NCAA Final Fours with the Stanford Cardinal, the Cardinal also won three Pac-10 titles, and she averaged 4.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists during her senior year.

Coaching career

Prior to joining the California Golden Bears in 2007, Smith served as the assistant coach of the Stanford University women's basketball team from 2004 – 2007, as well as Boston College from 2003 – 2004.[3]

For the 2012−13 season, she was promoted to associate head coach by 2nd year head coach Lindsay Gottlieb, helping to lead a team with high expectations coming off a second round NCAA tournament appearance in 2011−12.[4][5]
