Chioma Onyekwere
Chioma (C.C) Onyekwere born June 28, 1994 in Lansing, MI is an American-born Nigerian athlete. She has competed in both countries, representing Nigeria, most recently in the 2016 African Championship where she placed bronze in both women's shot and women's discus. She has been recognized for her academic achievement as a student athlete for four years by the Big Ten and the ACC. She is a captain of the UMD Track & Field team. She is also an All-American Thrower, ACC medalist, Big Ten medalist & Solomon Eye Terp of the Week recipient.[1] Cici was selected to compete in the Olympic Trials for Nigerian in preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. She also aspires to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Personal
Born to Chima and Scholar Onyekwere with triplet siblings Chidinma and Chima. Onyekwere grew up in Nigeria and moved to the states in 2002 with her family. Today she is currently enrolled University of Maryland graduating in Winter 2016 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Career
Pre-Collegiate
Onyekwere was a student at James W. Robinson High School. She competed under the guidance of former Maryland Thrower Beau Fay. Her triplet sister competed alongside her and they both were a force to be reckoned in their district. Onyekwere was not only District Champion several times but she is also a 2 time district record holder in the shot put. She claimed Regional Champion in 2011 and 2012 and Third in the state in 2011 & 2012. She placed 5th in Nationals in 2012 . Aside from her track record Onyekwere also played club soccer in Burke, VA where she was named best defensive player and most valuable player.[2]
2016 Senior African Championships
The 2016 African Championships was Onyekwere's debut to the Nigerian National Team where she placed 3rd in both Shot and Discus.
