Burkenroad was born in La Jolla, San Diego to William Burkenroad and Elizabeth Noriega.[2] She was only four years old when her mother died – her father suffered from depression and she became homeless for a time.[5] Until Mission Bay High School she had only played soccer with boys clubs.[6][7] She excelled in many sports and won a scholarship to California State University, Fullerton, Titans [2][3][5]
