Coincheck is a bitcoin wallet and exchange service headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, founded by Koichiro Wada and Yusuke Otsuka. It operates exchanges between bitcoin/ether and fiat currencies in Japan, and bitcoin transactions and storage in some countries worldwide.[1][2][3]

History

Coincheck started in August 2014 and is operated by ResuPress, inc (founded in 2012). As of Augest 2016, the exchange had over $160 million transactions/month.[4][5][6] At this time there were more than 2,200 merchants using their bitcoin payment solution just in Japan.[7] Also, Coincheck is a member of JBA(Japan Blockchain Association) and is actively helping to build the Japanese Bitcoin community’s usage standards with the government.

In March 2016, the entertainment company DMM.com with user-base of more than 19 million decided to use Coincheck's bitcoin payment processing solution.[8] Coincheck also partnered with SEKAI to support Chinese, Hong Kong, and Taiwan investors to buy Japanese real estate with bitcoin.[9][10] The company also supports buying/selling of ether,[11] DAO,[12][13] LISK,[14][15] and Ethereum Classic.[16]

Products

Coincheck has four core products: an exchange for trading bitcoin/ether and fiat currency, a wallet for bitcoin storage and transactions, an API for developers and merchants to build applications and accept bitcoin payments, and donation-based bitcoin crowdfunding.[17] The company offers buy/sell trading functionality in a majority of countries while the wallet is available worldwide.

The exchange can be funded through a bank transfer, wire or credit cards.[18] Coincheck trades on the exchange have a maker/taker price model in which traders pay either a 0.15% fee (taker) or -0.05% (maker) to execute trades.[19][20]
