Coleorton Wood

Coleorton Wood is near to Coalville in North West Leicestershire, England. Coordinates: 52°44′39.93″N 1°24′36.48″W / 52.7444250°N 1.4101333°W / 52.7444250; -1.4101333 It is a six-hectare mixed woodland that was planted during the early days of the National Forest. The site was formerly Coleorton Pit, or colliery,[1] which opened in 1875, and closed in the 1930s. It gained the local nickname of 'Bug and Wink' colliery.[2][3]

Coleorton Wood is on the route of the Mining Heritage Trail,[2] which is a 9-mile (14 km) walk tracing the coal mining history of this part of Leicestershire.

Activities & Features

Coleorton Wood has a picnic area and parking.
