St Mary's church, Collaton St Mary

Collaton St Mary is a village in the unitary authority of Torbay, Devon. It lies some 2 miles (3 km) west of the town of Paignton on either side of the Paignton to Totnes road.

The 19th century parish church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building [1]

The village Pub is called the Parkers Arms after later owners of the manor.

History

The village was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, when it was classed as a sub-manor of the Manor of Peintona. Since then the name of the village has changed many times from Collaton Clavil to Coletone, to Coleton Clavill to Collaton Kirkham (after the Kirkham family who held the manor for many generations) and finally to Collaton St Mary (when it became an ecclesiastical parish). The parish was created in 1864 and the foundation stone of St Mary's church laid on 21 September of that year. [2]
