Connecticut Green Party

The Connecticut Green Party is the Connecticut affiliate of the Green Party of the United States. The party is committed to grassroots democracy, social justice, non-violence and ecological wisdom. Those are also the four pillars of Green politics. Ralph Nader, perhaps the most well known Green Party figure in the United States, is from Connecticut, though he has never been a party member. For the 2006 election year, the Connecticut Green Party endorsed Cliff Thornton to run for Governor, and Ralph Ferrucci to run for U.S. Senate. The Connecticut Greens also endorsed Daniel Sumrall and Richard Duffee to run for Congress in the 3rd and 4th districts respectively.

In 2007 elections two party members were elected. In New Haven Allan Brison was elected alderman in the 10th Ward [1] (386 votes to 283),[2] and in Windham, party Co-chair Jean deSmet was elected First Selectman. DeSmet is the first Green Party candidate in the state to win a top municipal office [3]

Ballot access

On August 9, 2006, the Connecticut Greens submitted 13,000 signatures to complete their statewide petition drive for ballot access. Only 7,500 signatures were needed by 4 pm on Wednesday, but the party presented 13,000 as a buffer in case of any errors. Due to the 2010 congressional results, the Connecticut Greens currently hold ballot access in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd congressional districts.

2008 elections

For the first time in its history, the Green Party of Connecticut is running candidates for Congress in all five districts. Green congressional candidates include Steve Fournier (1st), Scott Deshefy (2nd), Ralph Ferrucci (3rd), Richard Duffee (4th) and Harold Burbank (5th).

Elected officials

As of November 2007 Five members hold elected office [4][5]
