Danilo "Danny" Etorma Suarez (born December 20, 1942)[1][2] is a Filipino politician and the incumbent Minority Floor Leader of the House of Representatives of the Philippines.[3] He is representing the 3rd District of Quezon.[4]

As legislator

Suarez first served as Quezon 3rd districts representative in 1992 and serve for three consecutive terms until 2001. Due to term limitation his wife Aleta Suarez run in 2001.[2][5] Being a close ally of then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, he was appointed as vice chair of the National Road Board. After his wife's term ended, he again serve for three consecutive terms from 2004 to 2013. On January 16, 2012, Suares assumed post as Minority Floor Leader of the House of Representatives of the Philippines replacing Edcel Lagman who earlier resigned due to a term-sharing agreement.[6][7][8]

He ran again unopposed during the 2016 election. He then ran for the Speakership in the 17th Congress of the Philippines but lost to Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez where he got 7 votes while Teddy Baguilat got 8 votes. Even though it's a tradition that the one who got the second highest votes is automatically the minority floor leader, a change in the house rules says that there should be an election within the minority bloc. He won as minority floor leader during the election on July 27, 2016 with 22 votes and 3 abstentions.[3][9][10][11]

Controversies

In the 10th Congress of the Philippines, Suarez called for an investigation of the purchase of radar systems by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. The then SMBA chief, Richard J. Gordon, pointed out that the inquiry may be due to the congressman's company losing the bid for the radar contract for Subic Bay International Airport. Gordon demanded that the ethics committee investigate Suarez but the majority just killed the motion.[5][12][13][14]

In 2007, Suarez offered 8 million pesos to pay for a smuggled Porsche sports utility vehicle scheduled for destruction by the Bureau of Customs.[15]

In 2009, Suarez admitted paying for the lavish dinner for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her party at Bobby Van’s steak house in Washington, D.C..[12][13][16][17][18]
