Dave and Chuck "The Freak" is a radio morning show that broadcasts weekdays from 6am to 10am over Detroit-based radio station "101 WRIF: The RIFF", primarily serving the Metro Detroit Area and Windsor. The show is currently hosted by David Hunter, Charles (Chuck "The Freak") Urquhart, Lisa Way, and Andy Green.[1] It is currently the top-rated radio show in the area by listenership. (Jul, 2016)[2]
Like many popular radio shows, the broadcast is also available via a live internet stream and as a podcast via RSS Feed and iTunes.
A Side-scrolling video game based on the show was released for iPhone and Android by Windsor-based video game company Red Piston Inc.[3]
History
The show first broadcast on April 18, 2001 on CIMX-FM (89X) in Windsor, Ontario as The Morning X with Dave and Chuck "The Freak".[4] The show achieved high-levels of popularity in the Detroit/Windsor Morning Radio scene, especially in the coveted 18-35 demographic.[5]
In November, 2012, the hosts and producers of the show accepted an offer to move over to Ferndale-based competitor WRIF, replacing the long-running WRIF morning show Drew and Mike[6]
Controversy
The show has been a center of controversy among Detroit residents and Detroit City Counsel about the appropriateness of aspects of their show, such as:
- Condoms handed out as merchandise that say "Dave and Chuck - We Got You Covered!"
- Billboards put around the city with censored-out explicit phrases on them. (Specifically: "It's Friday B!tch3s" and "P3n!s")[7]
- The discussion of abnormal human sexual behavior
- The use of the word "penis" as a greeting
- The title of the annual "Friday B!#ches Ball"
- Operation: Dark Stall, the nickname given to a series of events where the hosts of the show were almost terminated after being accused by a coworker of workplace harassment for discussing the unnamed person's abnormal bathroom habits on-the-air. They were ultimately allowed to retain their employment at the station provided they did not discuss the issue further or name the person involved.[8]
Community Involvement
The Friday B!#ches Bash was an annual "listener appreciation party" held at The Fillmore in downtown Detroit. The event was funded and organized by the radio station along with the show's hosts to "greet-and-treat" fans of the show. Highlights included: No admission fees, a live episode of the show performed on-stage by the hosts, free food, free musical performances by local bands, and free promotional merchandise.[9]
