Dean Mayrand
Dean Mayrand (born September 9, 1977) is a Canadian hockey player and boxer. Mayrand won the $62,000 first prize in the inaugural Battle of the Hockey Enforcers in 2005 in a split decision over Mike Sgroi.[1]
Born in Windsor, Ontario, Mayrand played junior hockey for the Kingsville Comets of the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League. Mayrand turned pro and played in the United Hockey League and the Western Professional Hockey League. In 2002, he signed with the Saint-Jean Mission of the LNAH and also began his boxing career in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu with local boxers and kickboxers. He has an 11-5 amateur boxing record. He has amateur boxing wins against professional MMA fighter Steve Bossé, and lost against former amateur Canadien boxing champion and undefeated pro boxer Éric Martel.
While playing in the LNAH, Mayrand won the first and only Battle of the Hockey Enforcers tournament in 2005 in Prince George, British Columbia, pitting 15 known hockey enforcers (many then playing in the LNAH) against each other in one-on-one hockey fights. In the group stage, Mayrand defeated Derek Parker by split decision and OHA player Eddie O'Toole by TKO, before earning a forfeit win over Sorel-Tracy Mission teammate Trent Potskin due to injury. After winning the group and advancing to the semifinals, he defeated Jason Rushton and AHL player Mike Sgroi in consecutive decisions to win the $62,250 top prize.
