Die Wolke

Die Wolke (The Cloud)[1] is a novel by German author Gudrun Pausewang,[2] published in German in 1987.

The story was published after the Chernobyl disaster of 1986 when nuclear fallout fell on much of Europe.[3] Sales of the book surged in 2011 in response to the nuclear disaster in Japan.[4]

Plot

The story deals with a Chernobyl-type nuclear disaster happening on German soil.[5] The heroine of the story is a fourteen-year-old girl who flees the contaminating cloud of radiation and experiences the ensuing breakdown of social order.[6][7]

Adaptations

Die Wolke was translated into English by Patricia Crampton and published in 1997 as Fall-Out.[8]

A film adaptation, The Cloud, was made in 2006.[9]

In 2014, a stage adaptation titled Mienai Kumo (Invisible Clouds) was written by Misaki Setoyama.[10]
