Ivan Andres Ramirez (born March 2, 1980), better known by his stage name Divo, is a Guatemala born Canadian hip hop recording artist, songwriter, creative director at his multimedia company Artesano Studio.[1][2] Divo has collaborated with various prominent music figures in Canada such as D.O., Classified, Dan-e-o, Eternia, D-Sisive and DL Incognito.[3] His album Transatlantic Soul won East Coast Rap Album of the Year at the 2016 Canadian Urban Television Hip Hop Awards.[4][5]
Career
Divo was born in 1980, in the Central American country of Guatemala. At the age of five, Divo and his family moved to Canada where he was first introduced to hip hop music. In 1999, Divo began recording for his debut album, Sparks of Friction which was released in 2000. The album contained the Bad Side Remix featuring prominent Canadian rapper Classified. Sparks of Friction also marked the beginning of his career as a professional songwriter.[6]
In 2003, Divo released his second album, The Evolution Theory. The album included collaborations with noted rappers such as Classified, Dan-e-o, Bishop Brigante and Juno Award winners Mystic and Miranda. Divo collaborated with Eternia and DL Incognito for his third album, This Iz Bizness which was released independently through URBNET Records in 2004.[2]
In 2015, Divo collaborated with award-winning French music producer, GMJ and released his fourth album, Transatlantic Soul.[7] The album won East Coast Rap Album of the Year at the 2016 Canadian Urban Television Hip Hop Awards and was featured in the Pan Am Path music compilation for the 2015 Pan American Games.[5] The first single from the album, Perseverance, was added to rotation on MTV Latin America. He has also performed as an opening act for Fito Blanko and Karl Wolf at the TDOT Fest in Toronto as well as for other artists like Classified, Solitair, Ghetto Concept and Choclair.[8] Divo's song Crash appeared in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving DVD shown in high schools across Canada to help curb impaired driving among youth.[9]
Divo has created album artwork for Classified for various releases including Juno award nominated Boy-Cott-In the Industry and Hitch Hikin' Music. He also designed logos for Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah and Killah Priest and was commissioned to design logos and ads for the 2017 Canadian Urban Television Hip Hop Awards.[6]
