Les Jardins Dorval (called Dorval Gardens in English) is one of the oldest shopping centres in Quebec. It is situated in the Montreal suburb of Dorval, Quebec, and located on Dorval Avenue near Autoroute 20. It was built in 1954 by the Ivanhoe Corporation which remained its owner and manager until 2001.
Tenants
Anchors of Jardins Dorval are Walmart, the Bay & Maxi.
A Dollarama operated for a number of years before closing in late 2009. After a one-year absence, Dollarama returned to the mall in the space of Pharmaprix which itself has relocated to Dollarama's former space.
There is a food court, with restaurants such as Scores and Double Pizza. In the parking lot, there is a standalone structure regrouping the restaurants La Belle Province, Sushi Shop and Thai Express; all three are tenants of the mall.
Sports Experts returned to the mall, opening November 1, 2012 and occupying the same space it did in the 2000s (formerly Cohoes).
History of anchors
Anchors in 1954 were Morgan's and Steinberg's.
Morgan's suffered a major fire in April 1969 but was rebuilt afterwards and returned to the mall in March 1970 after occupying a temporary location on Dorval Avenue during the reconstruction. It became the Bay in 1972.
A Pascal hardware store was added in 1985 after moving from the nearby strip mall. The Pascal store was closed and emptied in 1991. Pascal's former location became a Zellers in 1993. Zellers closed its doors in January 22, 2012. Walmart has assumed the lease and remodeled the store before opening it to the public.[3] Walmart opened in September 2012. This location was not part of the 39 Zellers stores that Walmart Canada had acquired from Target Canada.
In 1992, the Steinberg grocery store became a Maxi.
Evolution of the mall
Jardins Dorval was originally built as a large L shaped strip mall which opened in 1954 under the name "Dorval Gardens" with 35 stores.
In 1961, Morgan's added a second floor.
In the 1970s, Jardins Dorval was surrounded with glass (save for Steinberg and the Bay).
In 1985, the mall was fully renovated into how it is currently seen, doubling its number of stores. The original part of the mall corresponds to what is currently south or west to the interconnecting walkway, including the spaces occupied today by Maxi and the Bay. What was added after the renovations is everything that is east or north to the walkway.
