Overview

Energy Transfer Equity (ETE) was founded in 1995, headquartered in Dallas, Texas and employs 5,000 individuals.[1] including the founder, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Kelcy Warren.[2][3][4]

ETE is a master limited partnership, which owns the general partner and 100% of the incentive distribution rights (IDRs) of Energy Transfer Partners, L.P.(ETP) and about 50.2 million ETP limited partner units; it owns the general partner and 100% of the IDRs of Regency Energy Partners LP and about 26.3 million RGP limited partner units. ETE also owns a non-controlling interest in a corporation (ETP Holdco Corporation) that owns Southern Union Company and Sunoco, Inc. The ETE family of companies owns approximately 71,000 miles of natural gas, natural gas liquids, refined products, and crude pipelines. Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (ETP) is a master limited partnership owning and operating one of the largest and most diversified portfolios of energy assets in the United States. ETP has natural gas operations that include approximately 24,000 miles of gathering and transportation pipelines, treating and processing assets, and storage facilities. It is the parent company of Dakota Access, LLC, the company developing the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline.[1][5][6][7][8][9]

In October 2012, Sunoco, Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of ETP via ETP HoldCo Corporation. It acquired the general partner interests, 100% of the incentive distribution rights, and a 32.4% limited partnership interest in Sunoco Logistics Partners L.P., which operates a geographically diverse portfolio of crude oil and refined products pipelines, terminating and crude oil acquisition and marketing assets. ETP Holdco Corporation also owns Southern Union Company.

In 2014, ETP acquired Stripes, a chain of 580+ convenience stores in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.[10]

In January 2015, ETP acquired its affiliate Regency Energy Partners for around $11 billion.[11]

ETP holds a 70% interest in Lone Star NGL, a joint venture that owns and operates natural gas liquids storage, fractionation and transportation assets in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Dakota Access

Main article: Bakken pipeline

Dakota Access, LLC is an ETP subsidiary, tasked with building the Bakken pipeline, also known as the Dakota Access Pipeline.[12] In April 2016, three federal agencies — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Interior, and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation — requested a full Environmental Impact Statement of the pipeline.[13] In July, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe filed an injunction against the US Army Corps of Engineers to stop building the pipeline.[14][15] A group of young activists from Standing Rock ran from North Dakota to Washington, D.C., to present a petition in protest of the construction of the pipeline and launched an international campaign called ReZpect Our Water.[16]
