Enoch Cree Nation

The Enoch Cree Nation is a First Nations band in Alberta that is part of the Cree language group. It is also part of the larger Yellowhead Tribal Development Foundation tribal council.

This band controls two reserves – the larger Stony Plain 135 Indian Reserve on the western edge of the City of Edmonton and the smaller Stony Plain 135A Indian Reserve 43 km south of the Town of Barrhead.

Approximately 2,041 band members live on the larger reserve while others reside elsewhere within the Edmonton Capital Region. The registered total population of the band was 2,075 in January 2008.[1]

The band is currently in negotiations with the Canadian Crown regarding land claim settlements and the use of reserve land by the Department of Defence as a bombing range during the Second World War.

In October, 2006, the Enoch Cree Nation opened the River Cree Casino and Resort, a $210-million casino, hotel and sports complex located on the northeast corner of the larger reserve adjacent to the City of Edmonton.
