European Association of Nuclear Medicine
The European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) is an umbrella organisation comprising 39 national nuclear medicine member societies, 18 non-European affiliated societies and 3,200 individual members from over 80 countries, including physicians, scientists, technologists and other persons working in nuclear medicine or related fields. It is a professional non-profit association representing the nuclear medicine sector to the European institutions[1] and informing the general public and healthcare authorities about ongoing developments within the field. Based in Vienna, Austria, its activities extend throughout Europe.
Mission
The EANM aims to:
- Advance science and education in nuclear medicine for the benefit of public health
- Promote and co-ordinate, throughout Europe and beyond, discussion and exchange of ideas and results relating to the diagnosis, treatment, research and prevention of diseases through the use of unsealed radioactive substances and the properties of stable nuclides in medicine
Activities
The EANM hosts its own annual congress, which has become a platform for scientific exchange and attracts more than 5,000 delegates.[2][3] The EANM Congress features plenary lectures, free paper sessions on the most relevant advances in the field, symposia and debates, a full CME programme and a self-contained technologists’ continuing education section.
To highlight scientific excellence, the best paper submitted to the annual congress is bestowed the Marie Curie Award with a prize money of €3,000. The EANM also funds the EANM Eckert & Ziegler Abstract Award (up to five grants of €1,000 each) to encourage young and talented nuclear medicine investigators to submit their results to the annual congress and to aid them financially in attending the meeting and presenting their work. Up to three EANM Marie Curie Training Grants in the amount of €1.000 are awarded each year to cover the expenses of junior members of the association for obtaining short-term training in a recognised and competent European training centre.[4]
An additional scientific event organised by the EANM is the European Symposium on Radiopharmacy and Radiopharmaceuticals (ESRR). In collaboration with other European and American medical associations, the EANM also organises the International Congress of Nuclear Cardiology (ICNC) and the congress Molecular Imaging in Radiation Oncology (MIRO).
The EANM, together with Springer, publishes the monthly European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (EJNMMI). On its website, the EANM also publishes position papers concerning supply shortage and future medical use of radioisotopes.
Several EANM Task Groups and Committees dealing with subspecialties are dedicated to publishing procedural guidelines and other scientific papers, contributing to the educational programme of the EANM and to other scientific projects, and networking with other societies in their respective specialty.
The EANM Research Ltd (EARL) is a limited corporation under Austrian law, dedicated to research activities in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. EARL is a 100% subsidiary of the EANM and was created to:
- Facilitate (multicentre) research projects
- Enhance the comparability of data acquired by molecular imaging
- Position nuclear medicine within the EU research agenda
EARL is running pan-European projects which are coordinated by the EARL HQ, Vienna, Austria.
History
The EANM was founded in 1985 in London when the Society of Nuclear Medicine Europe merged with the European Nuclear Medicine Society.[5] Both societies’ focuses are still reflected within the EANM since the association simultaneously acts as a forum for individual members (who convene annually at the Members’ Assembly) and as an umbrella for the nuclear medicine societies of Europe (which convene at the Delegates’ Assembly).
