Fiery Mask (real name Jack Castle) is a fictional character from the Timely/Marvel Comics universe. He was a Golden Age superhero created by Joe Simon and first appeared in Daring Mystery Comics #1.
Publication history
He first appeared in Daring Mystery Comics #1, then in issues #5-6 and then in Human Torch Comics #2. He returned in 2008 in The Twelve.[1][2] Chris Weston has referred to him as "Marvel's Green Lantern."[3]
His appearances in Daring Mystery Comics #1 and Human Torch Comics #2 were reprinted in The Twelve #1/2.
Fictional character biography
Jack Castle, a renowned scientist, is called in by the police to help investigate a case in which zombies were abducting homeless men. During his investigation however, he is captured by a zombie and brought before "The Zombie Master," a 20' tall mad scientist who is kidnapping the hobos and then using a special ray to turn them into undead servants.
The Zombie Master attempts to do this to Castle, but fails due to Castle's familiarity with hypnosis. Enraged, the Zombie Master turns up the power on the ray generator, which causes the whole thing to explode. The Zombie Master is killed and Castle gains superpowers. He decides to use his newfound abilities to become the superhero Fiery Mask.[4]
This origin is recounted within the limited series The Twelve, however it is later revealed that the story is a fiction. His true origin his that his powers were passed to him from the previous holder who was dying (this is similar to the origin of Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Starbrand). Said holder had been the victim of a Mafia attack. The criminals had perished and Jack Castle allowed the victim to die as well so he would transfer the powers to Jack and not someone at the hospital or worse, fail to transfer the powers at all and thus lose them to oblivion[5]
After being revived in modern days,[6] Fiery Mask is killed while fighting Dynamic Man and transmits his power to the Phantom Reporter.[7]
