Floyd County Schools is the school district created to serve the public education needs of Floyd County, Kentucky.
The district has 19 schools serving a total of about six thousand students.
The school district comprises eight elementary schools :
- Allen Elementary School, Allen serving grades PK-8 [2]
- Betsy Layne Elementary School, Betsy Layne serving grades PK-8 [3]
- James A. Duff Elementary School, Eastern serving grades PK-5 [4]
- John M. Stumbo Elementary School, Grethel serving grades PK-8 [5]
- May Valley Elementary School, Martin serving grades PK-5 [6]
- McDowell Elementary School, McDowell serving grades PK-5 [7]
- Prestonsburg Elementary School, Prestonsburg serving grades PK-5 [8]
- W.D. Osborne Elementary School, Bevinsville serving grades PK-5 [9]
At the end of the 2016–17 school year, McDowell and Osborne Elementary Schools will close. The two schools will be consolidated into a single school at the campus now occupied by South Floyd High School, which will also close at that time.[10]
There are three middle schools serving grades 6-8:
- Allen Central Middle School, Eastern [11]
- James D. Adams Middle School, Prestonsburg [12]
- South Floyd Middle School, Hi Hat [13]
And five high schools serving grades 9-12:
- Allen Central High School, Eastern [14]
- Betsy Layne High School, Betsy Layne [15]
- Prestonsburg High School, Prestonsburg [16]
- Renaissance Learning Center, Martin [17]
- South Floyd High School, Hi Hat [18]
At the end of the 2016–17 school year, Allen Central and South Floyd will be closed as high schools and consolidated into the new Floyd Central High School at a new campus in Eastern.[10]
There are also some schools organized for non-traditional learning:
- Floyd County Area Technology Center, Martin which appears to be a former vocational High School. It currently reports zero students. [19]
- Home Instruction Elementary, Prestonsburg [20]
- Home Instruction H.S., Prestonsburg [21]
Once Allen Central High closes, it will be converted to the district's vocational/technical hub.[10]
