Biography
Award-winning American writer and producer Frank Spotnitz is the Chief Executive of Big Light Productions Ltd., a London- and Paris-based production company, which creates and oversees a diverse slate of international television series, including drama, comedy and documentaries. His 20+ year career in television includes creating, writing and producing series with networks, cable, streaming and other broadcast platforms around the world.
Founded by Spotnitz in 2013, Big Light Productions has become one of the fastest-growing independent production companies in Europe. Under the Big Light banner, Spotnitz has produced: Amazon Studios’s most popular series The Man in the High Castle; Medici: Masters of Florence, starring Richard Madden and Dustin Hoffman; Crossing Lines season 3 with Tandem/StudioCanal; and Transporter: The Series season 2 for the U.S.’s TNT, Germany’s M6 and HBO Canada; the suspense drama series Ransom for CBS, TF1 and Corus Entertainment; and the comedy-drama The Indian Detective, starring internationally famous comedian Russell Peters, for CTV.
Spotnitz executive produced, developed and wrote several episodes of the Amazon Studios drama series The Man in the High Castle, based on the classic alternative history novel by Philip K. Dick.[3][4] It is a co-production between Big Light, Scott Free Productions, Headline Pictures and Electric Shepherd Productions.[5]
Season One won Best Drama Series at the Roma Fiction Festival. It is nominated for four Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Cinematography; Outstanding Production Design; Outstanding Visual Special Effects; and Outstanding Main Title Design. The first season was also nominated for an American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Cinematography, the USC Scripter Award and Best Drama at Monte-Carlo Television Festival’s Golden Nymph Awards.
All ten episodes launched in Fall 2015 in the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Japan and the show since set records to become Amazon Studios’ most viewed series ever.[6] In January 2015, the pilot also debuted to strong support from audiences, who made it the most viewed and positively received in Amazon Studios' history. The series made many ‘best of the year’ lists, including National Public Radio and USA Today.
Spotnitz created and co-wrote the eight-part drama series Medici: Masters of Florence, starring Richard Madden and Dustin Hoffman. The series is produced with Lux Vide Productions for RAI, Italy’s largest broadcaster. Acclaimed theatrical distributors Wild Bunch launched their television division with the project and oversee global rights for it.
Ransom is a drama set against an international backdrop, starring Luke Roberts for CBS in the U.S., France’s TF1 and Canada’s Corus Entertainment/Global. The thriller is executive produced and co-created by Spotnitz.
Spotnitz developed, co-created and is executive producing the comedy-drama series The Indian Detective, starring international comedy sensation Russell Peters, for Canadian broadcaster CTV.
Spotnitz executive produced and wrote episodes of season three of StudioCanal/Tandem’s international thriller Crossing Lines, starring Goran Višnjić, Elizabeth Mitchell and Donald Sutherland.[7]
In 2012, Spotnitz created, wrote and executive produced the international spy drama series Hunted for BBC One and HBO/Cinemax, starring Melissa George. His additional writing and producing credits include: counter-terrorism drama series Strike Back (HBO/Cinemax, Sky); action series Transporter: The Series (TNT); ABC’s mystery series Night Stalker (ABC and Touchstone Television) with Stuart Townsend and Gabrielle Union; Michael Mann’s crime series Robbery Homicide Division (CBS); unconventional heroes comedy-drama The Lone Gunmen (Fox); sci-fi drama Harsh Realm (Fox); and crime thriller Millennium (Fox).
Spotnitz served on The X-Files for eight of its nine seasons after joining the show in 1994. He directed two episodes and wrote or co-wrote more than 40 installments of the series, including the Emmy-nominated “Memento Mori” with Chris Carter, Vince Gilligan, and John Shiban in 1997. He served four years as executive producer and three years as president of Chris Carter's Ten Thirteen Productions. He was a producer and co-writer of both X-Files feature films, The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998) and The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008).[8]
Spotnitz shares three Golden Globes for Best Dramatic Series and a Peabody Award for his work on The X-Files. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for writing and three times for Outstanding Drama Series.
Born in Japan, Spotnitz received a B.A. in English literature from UCLA and an M.F.A. in screenwriting from the American Film Institute.
