Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science

The Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) (until October 2016 the Hofstra School of Engineering and Applied Science) at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, was created in 2012 out of previously existing Departments of Engineering and Computer Science..,[1] and currently offers 3 ABET-accredited degrees in engineering (B.S. Electrical, B.E. Engineering Science with options in Biomedical or Civil, and B.S. Mechanical Engineering) along with a B.S. Industrial Engineering, a B.A. and B.S. Computer Science, a B.S. Computer Engineering, a B.S. Computer Science and Mathematics, and an M.S. Computer Science.[2]

The current Dean of the school is Dr. Sina Rabbany.[1]

The School of Engineering and Applied Science was renamed to the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science on October 20, 2016.[3]

Academics

The school is distinguished by its emphasis on undergraduate teaching, with over 600 undergraduates matriculating in Fall 2016[4] served by a full-time faculty of approximately 30, and select adjuncts who are professionals in industry.[5] Approximately 60 graduate students are in the M.S. program in Computer Science. A Co-op program initiated in Spring 2015 offers upper level students the opportunity to work full-time for six to eight months at competitive salaries for one of well over 100 high tech companies,[6] mainly but not exclusively in the New York metropolitan area.[7][8]

A robust summer research program, with funding for undergraduates, is available in a variety of subject areas. The Center for Innovation, a program operating in SEAS, offers solutions to technical problems brought to its attention by industries, but with the industry maintaining all intellectual property rights. Largely overseen by current SEAS faculty, it also offers opportunities for students to work on practical projects.[9]

Rankings

According to the most recent U.S. News & World Report data released in September 2016, Hofstra SEAS currently ranks 55th out of 198 non-PhD granting engineering schools throughout the United States[10]

Facilities

In early 2016, Hofstra SEAS received a $25 million state grant and a $10 Million gift to build a new 65,000 square foot building for the School in addition to its existing facilities. The building was to be named after Long Island builder Fred DeMatteis.[3] It was renamed 'Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science' in October 2016.[11]

Several of these laboratories were created or enhanced through a recently completed $12 million upgrade of the facilities. A recently received $25 million grant from New York State is earmarked toward the construction within the next few years of a new building to house all SEAS departments and laboratories[12][13]
